The University of New Mexico's duck pond has become a beloved spot for students, faculty, and local residents to gather, study, and unwind. Originating from humble beginnings, the pond has evolved into a central hub of activity on campus.

Trinity Moody, a fourth-year undergrad, reminisced about the pond's transformation, stating, “Ducks always flew down to hang out and it was a popular duck spot for a long while. Eventually, planners — and perhaps students? — decided to make the lot a full-fledged pond so that the ducks would have a true designated spot to hang out.”

While the pond's establishment faced some opposition, with a professor once expressing concerns about potential trouble, the area ultimately prevailed and has since thrived as a focal point of relaxation and enjoyment for the university community.

Richard Schorr, the manager of UNM Grounds & Landscaping, highlighted the pond's appeal, noting, “It’s a great place to relax, study, or catch a breath from our busy days. The ducks provide non-stop entertainment, and water always has a calming effect.”

Despite the pond's popularity, maintaining its pristine condition requires significant effort. Regular skimming, water monitoring, and deep cleaning every two years are among the tasks necessary to preserve the pond's beauty and functionality. Additionally, recent funding has allowed for upgrades to enhance safety and aesthetics, with improvements such as repaired bridge surfaces, added seating, and enhanced accessibility features.

As spring approaches, the duck pond serves as a perfect setting for various activities, from leisurely walks and picnics to studying and socializing. Visitors are encouraged to take advantage of the serene atmosphere, vibrant blooms, and charming duck inhabitants that make the UNM duck pond a cherished campus oasis.
