Bernalillo County has recently announced that its Grow-the-Growers program (GTG) has been awarded the "Heart of the Land Award" for exceptional leadership in farming and ranching. The award was given by Farm to Table and the New Mexico Food & Agriculture Policy Council. GTG is a comprehensive training initiative for beginner farmers, designed to encourage new entrants into professional food production.

The Heart of the Land Award acknowledges initiatives that contribute to a resilient local food, farming, and ranching economy. Sponsored by Rep. Joanne Ferrary and Senators Liz Stefanics and Pete Campos, the award highlights the importance of ensuring that New Mexicans have access to fresh, healthy food. According to a press release by Bernalillo County, the Grow-the-Growers program is coordinated by Bernalillo County Open Space in collaboration with Agri-Cultura Network, Ciudad Soil and Water Conservation District, and Bernalillo County-NMSU Cooperative Extension. The program combines practical experience with classroom learning to strengthen the local economy, maintain public lands in agricultural production, and contribute to the local food system.

Open Space Manager Mari Simbaña expressed her pride in the program's achievements: "It is a privilege to have a program that makes it possible for emerging growers to learn small farming techniques and business skills to help launch their enterprises," she said according to a press release by Bernalillo County. Simbaña added: "And I’m happy to be working with such great partners in bringing New Mexicans local, organic, and fresh produce from our own Open Space, here in the South Valley."

The New Mexico Food and Agriculture Policy Council (NMFAPC) consists of various groups and individuals committed to addressing issues related to food and agriculture systems.
