APS admin named board chairman for NACSA

Albuquerque Public Schools (APS) has announced that Joseph Escobedo, an administrator at APS, will assume the role of board chairman for the National Association of Charter School Authorizers (NACSA). In this new position, Escobedo will lead NACSA in its ongoing efforts, marking a significant shift in his role within the national charter school group.

Effective immediately, Escobedo takes on the position of board chairman of NACSA. He previously served as the board secretary and a member since December 2020. As the senior director in the office of innovation and school choice at APS, he manages the charter school team and oversees a portfolio of 31 schools. According to an APS press release, Escobedo's experience is extensive; he served as chief of staff to the superintendent for six years and played a pivotal role in establishing APS's inaugural equity and engagement department as its first chief equity officer.

"I’m both honored and humbled to be chosen as the next board chair," said Escobedo. "I am passionate about the work that NACSA does putting students, families, and communities at the center. All students, no matter what type of public school they attend, deserve high-quality educational opportunities and I’m excited to expand my work in this area."

NACSA President & CEO M. Karega Rausch also commented on Escobedo's appointment. "I’ve known and worked with Joseph for several years," said Rausch. "His commitment to families and communities is remarkable. That focus and dedication will be impactful in his leadership with NACSA."
