Mark Roper, Acting Cabinet Secretary | New Mexico Economic Development Department

The New Mexico Economic Development Department (EDD) has announced a reshuffling of key roles within the department. Mark Roper has been appointed as the Acting Cabinet Secretary, succeeding Jon Clark who will now assume the role of State Investment Officer with the New Mexico State Investment Council.

Roper, who joined EDD in 2014, has steadily risen through the ranks from a community development role to becoming the Division Director for Economic Development in 2019. He brings to his new position a diverse background that includes experience as a licensed electrician and HVAC mechanic, radio marketing engagement, and serving as an elected city official in Raton. According to an EDD press release, Roper played a pivotal role in promoting development along New Mexico's International Borderplex and successfully attracted companies from various countries. This led to significant agency deals with major entities such as Facebook, Intel, Netflix, Universal Hydrogen, Maxeon Solar, and Hota Industrial.

"The governor and lawmakers understand that New Mexico is at an economic crossroads," Roper said in an EDD press release. "We need to continue to diversify our economy and not only create jobs but create jobs with career paths to help all New Mexicans elevate and improve their position in life, which in turn will create economic security for future generations. We need to strategically invest in economic development, and I will continue to pursue this mission with passion and collaboration."

According to its About webpage, EDD is committed to enhancing the well-being of New Mexico families by fostering economic opportunities and creating a conducive environment for business success. The department oversees initiatives supporting community development and collaborates with the New Mexico Partnership - a public-private organization - to globally market the state for job creation and investment. Direct assistance to businesses and communities is provided through various programs housed in the Business Resource Center.
