Bernalillo County has announced that the Youth Service Center (YSC) is effectively managed and dedicated to maintaining necessary staffing levels. The YSC in Bernalillo County provides services to youth aged 12 to 18 who are awaiting court proceedings for alleged delinquent acts, offering housing and related services.
According to the YSC webpage provided by Bernalillo County, the center adheres to principles of direct supervision. This includes emphasizing effective control, fostering direct staff interaction with juveniles, competent staff recruitment and training, ensuring safety, and promoting manageable and cost-effective operations. Prioritizing communication, classification, and orientation, the center aims to provide a just and fair environment that respects juveniles' constitutional rights. It also emphasizes a sense of ownership and adherence to the facility's philosophy, mission, goals, values, and policies.
"Personal safety of the residents and the staff are paramount," says Bernalillo County Manager Julie Morgas Baca in a press release by Bernalillo County. "Our priority is to ensure that each shift is adequately staffed with proper supervision in place."
Gray adds: "Staffing challenges are not unique to the Youth Service Center or Bernalillo County. It’s a nationwide issue in corrections settings. We remain steadfast in our commitment to operate the facility properly, safely, and with the utmost care for our employees and residents." He further states: "YSC wouldn’t be where it is today without the tireless efforts of our amazing staff. We are grateful for their dedication and hard work."
According to information on its webpage provided by Bernalillo County, YSC prioritizes community safety by ensuring a secure environment for detained youth. The medical department, behavioral health services, case management, and nutrition programs aim to address the diverse needs of youth by providing comprehensive healthcare, personalized support, and balanced meals. Furthermore, essential mental health services and substance abuse treatment for youth in the juvenile justice system are offered by the Children's Community Mental Health Clinic and the AYUDA program.
