The New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs (NMDCA) has announced the appointment of Dr. John Taylor-Montoya as the executive director of the Office of Archaeological Studies (OAS). In his new role, Dr. Taylor-Montoya will be responsible for providing strategic and ethical leadership, guidance, fiscal oversight, and overall supervision to OAS.
According to a press release by NMDCA, Dr. Taylor-Montoya assumed his position on Jan. 6, 2024. His responsibilities include managing staff and volunteers, fostering collaboration with various entities such as other NMDCA divisions, the Museum of New Mexico Board of Regents, and the Museum of New Mexico Foundation, including the Friends of Archaeology. Prior to this appointment, he held the role of program director at OAS.
"I feel honored to serve as the executive director of Office of Archaeological Studies," said Taylor-Montoya in a statement released by NMDCA. "I am excited for the opportunity to continue working with the outstanding staff and volunteers. Together, I believe we will make OAS successful now and for years to come."
Debra Garcia y Griego, Cabinet Secretary for NMDCA, also shared her thoughts on Taylor-Montoya's appointment in a press release by NMDCA: "John’s work experience and deep commitment to archaeology and cultural resources in New Mexico will serve Office of Archaeological Studies well," she said. "John has a strong knowledge of state and federal laws related to cultural resource management work. He has a clear belief that respectful dialogue and transparency are key elements for building positive relationships with the diverse stakeholders that OAS serves."
According to its About webpage, OAS is involved in archaeological research aimed at discovering, interpreting, and disseminating information about prehistoric and historic sites across New Mexico. In collaboration with state agencies and private organizations for development projects, OAS operates specialized laboratories, a research library, and a publications department to fulfill its mission.
