Los Alamos projects in artificial intelligence and machine learning

Los Alamos National Laboratory recently announced that several projects focusing on the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning in science and energy have received funding from the Department of Energy Office of Science. These projects at Los Alamos National Laboratory utilize these advanced technologies to enhance accelerator performance and address challenges in fusion reactor design according to a press release by Los Alamos National Laboratory.

According to the press release, Los Alamos National Laboratory stated, "Multiyear efforts include partnerships with national laboratories and universities."

One of the projects at Los Alamos National Laboratory is advancing accelerator technology with $16 million in funding from the Department of Energy. Alexander Scheinker is leading a project to make compact accelerators more efficient using AI, as stated in the press release.

Los Alamos researchers are involved in two of the Office of Science Nuclear Physics program's 15 funded projects, using AI for accelerator and detector optimization. Physicist Ming Xiong Liu leads a project to pioneer AI-driven methods for detecting rare heavy quark production in heavy ion collisions, according to the press release.

Furthermore, Los Alamos is part of a $29 million funding round by the Office of Science Fusion Energy Sciences program to research AI and machine learning for fusion energy. Physicist Xianzhu Tang leads a project that develops AI methodologies for fusion energy systems, with a focus on disruption mitigation, as stated in the press release.

Mark Chadwick, acting deputy Laboratory director for Science, Technology and Engineering at Los Alamos National Laboratory, commented on the projects, saying, "The promise of artificial intelligence, in its various manifestations, is that we can create systems capable of learning and making decisions on their own. The projects supported by the Office of Science here showcase the various ways in which Los Alamos researchers are harnessing the transformative power of artificial intelligence to develop solutions that drive science forward," as cited in the press release.
