The University of New Mexico (UNM) has announced the establishment of a new Sustainability Department, according to a press release by UNM. The department is part of UNM's commitment to creating a more eco-friendly and environmentally responsible campus in alignment with the UNM 2040 Strategic Planning Framework.

UNM outlined that the department will work to establish short- and long-term goals aligned with the broader sustainability objectives of the university. This includes ensuring compliance not only in campus operations but also in education, research, creative works, and administration. In the coming weeks and months, the department will implement a transition plan, including the creation of a dedicated departmental website.

By creating a dedicated Sustainability Department, UNM aims to lead the reduction of its environmental impact. The department will focus on five core university activities: Material Management, Energy, Buildings and Grounds, Food and Dining Services, and Transportation. UNM is currently seeking a Director of Sustainability to lead the effort, reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Campus Environments & Facilities in Institutional Support Services.

"This initiative marks a significant step in our journey toward a more sustainable future. By creating a dedicated Sustainability Department and enlisting a Director of Sustainability, we are better poised to reduce our environmental impact and align our efforts with the UNM 2040 strategic vision," said Lisa Marbury, assistant vice president of Campus Environments & Facilities, according to a press release by UNM.

The UNM Sustainability Strategic Plan (SSP) is being developed to establish precise objectives and actions for mitigating Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. The plan will address and reduce the university's environmental impact in various areas.

UNM's commitment to sustainability extends beyond the campus. The university aims to make impactful changes not just on campus but also for the community. "Join us in celebrating this monumental step towards a cleaner, healthier planet and a more sustainable future for all," said Lisa Marbury, according to a press release by UNM.

The establishment of the Sustainability Department at UNM demonstrates the university's dedication to creating a greener and more sustainable future. With the implementation of the UNM Sustainability Strategic Plan, the university is taking significant steps to reduce its environmental impact and promote sustainability in all aspects of its operations.
