The University of New Mexico (UNM) has announced that Eva Encinias, Director of the National Institute of Flamenco (NIF), has been honored with the 2022 NEA National Heritage Fellowship. The prestigious award was presented to Encinias at a special event held at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C., according to a press release.
"The NIF is incredibly proud of Encinias," UNM announced.
Eva Encinias, a dedicated flamenco artist and educator, established the National Institute of Flamenco (NIF), the Conservatory of Flamenco Arts, and the Festival Flamenco Alburquerque in 1982. With over four decades of teaching flamenco, she holds the title of Professor Emeritus in the College of Fine Arts at UNM, even after her retirement in 2021. Notably, her daughter Marisol Encinias now serves as the executive director of NIF and is also a professor at UNM, according to a press release.
"Eva developed flamenco as an art form by breaking down the essential tenets of the art to create an accessible, rigorous curriculum," said the NIF. "As a key figure in enriching the New Mexican cultural landscape, Eva has been a catalyst for developing flamenco as an art form in New Mexico through performance, teaching, and community advocacy. Through Eva's work, Albuquerque is widely recognized as the epicenter of flamenco in the United States."
"Receiving this award has had such an impact not only on me but also my community. The wonderful people of our city and state are so supportive of our work, but when they see me and my efforts being acknowledged nationally it reaffirms how wonderful it is to have the presence of such a powerful art form to enjoy and appreciate," said Eva Encinias. "I want to mention that I've had tremendous help along the way and there is still so much work to do. I want to be part of the effort as long as possible."
Encinias' recognition as a NEA National Heritage Fellow highlights her significant contributions to the field of flamenco and her dedication to preserving and promoting this rich art form. Her influence has not only impacted her local community but has also helped establish Albuquerque as a prominent hub for flamenco in the United States.
