The New Mexico Department of Health (DOH) is emphasizing the significance of early detection and screenings in the fight against breast cancer during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In a press release, the DOH outlined the symptoms and risk factors for breast cancer from the CDC.

According to the press release, breast cancer causes around 43,700 deaths per year in America. The DOH is urging awareness of the disease and encouraging early detection through regular screening with mammography.

The CDC has provided a list of potential symptoms associated with breast cancer, including the detection of a new lump in the breast or underarm, thickening or swelling of the breast, skin changes like irritation or dimpling, redness or flaky skin around the nipple area, nipple-related issues such as pulling in or pain, unusual nipple discharge, alterations in breast size or shape, and experiencing pain in any part of the breast. Monitoring for these symptoms is crucial in early detection, and seeking prompt medical attention if any of these signs are noticed is recommended for breast health.

Jodi McGinnis Porter, Communications Director for DOH and a breast cancer survivor, emphasized the power of determination and early detection. She said, "Breast cancer survivors exemplify the power of determination and early detection. Our message is clear: with the right care, a positive mindset, and a sense of humor, we can conquer this challenge. The key is early detection and staying up-to-date with mammograms."

Several key factors can elevate the risk of developing breast cancer, including gender, age, genetic mutations such as BRCA1 or BRCA2 alterations, a history of radiation therapy to the chest during adolescence or young adulthood, as well as a family or personal history of breast cancer or breast-related issues like lumps or discharge. The CDC's guidelines underscore the importance of regular screenings and proactive breast health management, particularly for individuals with higher-risk profiles. It is crucial to consult with healthcare professionals for personalized guidance on risk assessment and preventive measures.

In the fight against breast cancer, early detection is key. The New Mexico Department of Health is urging individuals to be aware of the symptoms, risk factors, and the importance of regular screenings with mammography. By promoting awareness and encouraging early detection, they hope to reduce the number of deaths caused by breast cancer each year.
