New Mexico is set to receive the newly recommended updated COVID-19 vaccine for the Fall/Winter season, according to the NM Department of Health. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has advised that individuals aged 6 months and older should receive this updated vaccine for protection during the upcoming fall and winter. Shipments of the updated vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna are expected to arrive in New Mexico soon.

The COVID-19 vaccines will continue to be available at no cost for those with private health insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid. Uninsured individuals can also obtain the vaccine free of charge through various locations, including health centers, public health offices, and participating pharmacies in the CDC's Bridge Access Program. The goal is to ensure widespread availability and accessibility of the vaccine.

Vaccination remains the most effective way to protect against severe COVID-19 outcomes, such as hospitalization, death, and the long-term effects of Long COVID. The Department of Health recommends that individuals who have not received a COVID-19 vaccine in the past two months obtain an updated dose to enhance their protection during the upcoming fall and winter seasons.

Dr. Miranda Durham, the Medical Director of the New Mexico Department of Health, highlighted the advantage of having vaccines available for COVID-19, RSV, and the flu. She emphasized the importance of these safe and updated vaccines in protecting individuals, their loved ones, and the community. In case of illness, individuals are advised to consult their healthcare provider about proven treatments that can reduce the risk of severe illness, hospitalization, and loss of life.

In addition to the COVID-19 vaccine, the CDC also recommends that everyone, particularly adults aged 65 and older and pregnant individuals in their first and second trimesters, should receive the flu vaccine. This is because co-infections of COVID-19 and influenza can lead to severe illness. Flu and RSV vaccines are readily available at healthcare facilities and pharmacies throughout New Mexico.
