American Humane, the foremost national humane organization in the U.S. and the largest certifier of animal welfare practices globally, revealed on Aug. 10 that ABQ BioPark in Albuquerque, New Mexico has been awarded the esteemed American Humane Certified™ seal, according to a press release.

This recognition was awarded to the ABQ BioPark, which encompasses an active aquarium, zoo, botanical garden and public park, for its exemplary animal treatment and dedication to conservation efforts.

"ABQ BioPark’s commitment to animal conservation both locally and globally is commendable," Robin Ganzert, president and CEO of American Humane, said.

The Humane Conservation™ initiative stands as the inaugural certification initiative solely focused on verifying the ethical treatment and well-being of animals residing in global zoos, aquariums and conservation centers. Supported by a distinguished Scientific Advisory Committee consisting of experts in animal science, behavior and ethics, the program sets forth rigorous, science-driven criteria for animal welfare, according to a press release.

“I am pleased to announce that (ABQ BioPark) has earned the American Humane Certified™ certification for excellence and that means visitors will know that the park has met American Humane’s high standards for care and the animals receive the love and compassion they deserve,” Ganzert said.

The certification procedure, conducted through impartial third-party assessments, validates various aspects of animal well-being. This encompasses diverse evaluations such as optimal health and accommodations, positive interactions with both fellow animals and caregivers, secure and enriching surroundings and the presence of comprehensive strategies and protocols for healthcare, the release stated.

“Each and every day the dedicated professionals at the ABQ BioPark provide the very highest quality of care to the animals across all BioPark facilities,” said Stephanie Stowell, BioPark director. “This designation by American Humane is yet another way for us to measure the high standard of care provided to the animals that call the BioPark home and that serve as ambassadors for the conservation work that drives us all.”
