On Aug. 7, the ABQ BioPark, in collaboration with Mayor Tim Keller, released its annual report, spotlighting the significant changes driven by the 1/8 cent gross receipts tax (GRT), according to a press release. Approved by voters and effective from July 2016, the GRT has spurred major renovations, highlighted in the report, which details completed, ongoing and upcoming projects.
"This period of transformation funded by the GRT is incredibly exciting to watch," Brandon Gibson, deputy director of the Department of Arts & Culture, said.
The report outlines that a total of $31.1 million from GRT funds has been directed toward capital enhancements, encompassing repair and revitalization efforts. The effects of GRT are particularly evident at the zoo, where Asia and Australia construction projects are in progress. The Asia project is nearing its conclusion and is set to open this autumn, while the first phase of Australia's development is expected to be finalized in early 2024. Another endeavor funded by the GRT includes the ongoing renovation of the Heritage Farm at the Botanic Garden, slated for a mid-2024 opening. Over the past fiscal year, GRT allocations have also facilitated the introduction of an electric shuttle connecting the zoo, aquarium and garden, as well as the creation of a new heated backstage pool for hippos, according to the press release.
“We’re building best-in-class homes for animals, expanding the work we do to protect plants around the world, and investing in learning opportunities for our community,” Gibson said.
As the midpoint of the 15-year GRT funding span is reached, the BioPark has formulated a Facility Plan Update that mirrors the shifting preferences of its community and the welfare of its plants and animals. This update will steer the remaining GRT years, with the comprehensive plan's release scheduled for October. The BioPark's GRT report also casts a retrospective gaze on significant achievements, encompassing attractions such as Penguin Chill at the Zoo, North American River Otters at the Aquarium and enhancements to the Butterfly Pavilion at the Botanic Garden.
