The New Mexico Film Office is now offering its latest series of online production assistant training for those hoping to begin work in the local film industry.

A production assistant is an entry-level crew position whose duties include a variety of administrative and physical tasks on set. The free online PA training sessions, titled "Breaking In," are one day long and run from May to July 2023.

“Being a production assistant is an ideal way to launch a career in the industry, providing on-the-job training and valuable exposure to how stories are brought to life on the screen,” Amber Dodson, NMFO director told KRQE. “No matter your aspiration in the film industry, learning the nuts and bolts of filmmaking as a PA is essential to success.”

The training sessions are being conducted in partnership with Silver Heart Productions. Participants will receive a comprehensive understanding of the PA role. Michael Jones is teaching the sessions. The New Mexico resident has experience as an executive, creator, and line producer for more than 28 years in the industry. “This training is to help establish yourself and launch your career to succeed in New Mexico and teach the necessary skillset,” Jones in a release.

“Breaking In” training is being held online via Zoom. Participants must be New Mexico residents over 18 and interested and available to work immediately. Registrations for upcoming Saturday sessions must be submitted no later than 10 a.m. the preceding Friday. Space is limited, and spots will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Those interested can apply through a form offered by Film New Mexico.

The New Mexico Film Office is a division of the Economic Development Department that serves the film and television industry locally, nationally and internationally. "Our purpose is to market the state to this industry, assist the productions, and create jobs for New Mexicans," according to its website.
