Albertsons Market donated nearly 5,000 pounds of apples to Storehouse New Mexico April 19.

The donation is a part of their “Take a Bite Out of Hunger” program, according to a KOB 4 report. The grocer created the program 13 years ago to help feed underserved communities and bring attention to food insecurity. This year, the company has donated more than 50,000 pounds of apples across New Mexico and Texas.

“When we look at food insecurities in the area, we want to give back and help that cause,” Eric Fuller, from Albertsons Market, told KOB 4. “Apples are a great way to do that as they’re nutritious and shelf stable.”

The Storehouse was created in 1976 and provides nutritious food to about 50,000 people each year, according to its website.

Leaders of the non-profit said apples add a variety of food and produce something they’re hoping to give more, according to KOB 4.

“Due to SNAP benefits being reduced, we’ve seen a sharp increase in demand,” Kevin Cochran, the operations manager at Storehouse New Mexico, told KOB 4. “The Storehouse has been very, very busy in the last month. We have seen lots of people coming through and we’re proud to serve everyone and not turn anyone away – and have for everybody and it’s donations like this that make that possible.”

According to the Storehouse, 15.5% of New Mexicans don’t know where their next meal will come from; New Mexico is ranked no. 1 in childhood hunger in the United States and among the highest for adult hunger; more than 105,000 people are food insecure in Bernalillo County; and 1 out of every 5 children in New Mexico is experiencing hunger.

"Be the light of hope! Having food is not a given for many local families,” the Storehouse states on its website. “Children, adults, and seniors experience hunger in our community every day. Thanks to your generosity, the Storehouse is here to help with free groceries. Every dollar donated provides five meals. Please consider a gift today. Together we can make sure the future is brighter in regard to hunger in New Mexico."

Roadrunner Food Bank will also receive apple donations.
