The city of Albuquerque’s Animal Welfare Department is looking to spice up an upcoming adoption event by having local artists create artwork of animals.
The artists will use the paw prints of adoptable dogs or cats to create art that will be displayed and available for sale in the shelter lobby during the adoption event scheduled for April 29 and 30, according to a KOB 4 report.
“We’re asking them to partner with our lovable, talented artist, pets as well as partnering with animal-loving artists to create beautiful art and hopefully it will highlight our shelter pets as well as the art community,” Desiree Cawley, of the city’s animal welfare department, told KOB 4.
The department will feature the pieces on social media for the adoption event. Artists will need to complete their pieces before April 29. All proceeds from the sale will go to the sheltering of homeless pets.
“The proceeds will definitely help our shelter,” Cawley said. “We have so many programs. We offer spay and neuter and vaccinations to help people. We also buy items that we probably couldn’t without these proceeds.”
Artists don’t have to pay to participate. The Animal Welfare Department will schedule a time for each artist to come to the shelter and begin working directly with their companion pet to obtain a suitable set of paw prints, according to KOB 4.
The paintings will be exhibited and for sale at the East and West Side shelter lobbies during the adoption event and more than 600 pets are available for adoption, according to the city of Albuquerque website.
All adoption fees are waived for all pets during the adoption event. Each adoption will include spaying or neutering, a microchip, and vaccinations, according to the Animal Welfare Department. For dogs, owners will receive one free training class.
