The University of New Mexico Hospital (UNMH) is eager to hear the public’s opinions and concerns when it comes to healthcare.

UNMH leaders and Bernalillo County Commissioners are encouraging residents of Bernalillo County to attend one of a series of town meetings called “Community Health Listening Sessions.”

The first session is scheduled for Tuesday, March 7 at the International District Library followed by the second session on March 16 at Los Padillas Community Center. Other sessions are on April 13 at the Raymond G. Sanchez Community Center; May 11 at the Paradise Hills Community Center and June 15 at Los Vecinos Community Center.

“We really want to hear from our community about what their health needs are as we think about how we prioritize use of our resources to improve the health of the people of Bernalillo County,” UNMH CEO Kate Becker said in a release from UNM.

Residents can voice their healthcare needs and concerns, and exchange feedback with hospital administrators and members of the county commission during the sessions. UNM Hospital will compile notes from the series and aim to incorporate the suggestions into future planning.

“These community health listening sessions are the perfect way to begin our 2024 UNM Hospital Mill Levy process,” Barbara Baca, a Bernalillo County commissioner, said per KRQE. “We look forward to hearing directly from the residents in each district of Bernalillo County, and we appreciate the opportunity to participate in these important community gatherings.”

The extension of the mill levy figures is a topic of discussion. Bernalillo County voters will decide in the Nov. 8 general election whether to continue an eight-year property tax for UNMH. The tax brought in more than $115 million last year, according to the release, which is 10% of UNMH’s revenue and covers operating expenses.
