Public Service Company of New Mexico recycles Christmas trees into mulch: 'It is an important part of the company’s work'

PNM (Public Service Company of New Mexico), the state's largest electricity provider, has turned discarded Christmas trees into mulch that can be used for plants and landscaping.

PNM told KRQE News it recycled 5,190 trees from Albuquerque and Rio Rancho residents after Christmas, resulting in more than 36,000 pounds of mulch.

The recycling of trees is part of PNM’s Vegetation Management Department, which has partnered with the city of Albuquerque for more than 30 years.

“Most people may not think there is a correlation between PNM and vegetation, but it is an important part of the company’s work,” PNM Vegetation Management Manager Thaddeus Petzold said, according to KRQE News.

PNM recycled Christmas trees at the Albuquerque Eagle Rock Convenience Center (4,370 trees), the Albuquerque Montessa Convenience Center (250 trees) and the Rio Rancho Sports Complex (570 trees).

PNM said residents can pick up free mulch from the Albuquerque Eagle Rock Convenience Center.
