The chaos of the 2022 holiday season was evident at the Albuquerque Sunport, where exhausted travelers endured the same flight delays and cancellations experienced across the nation. Some people have been waiting days for flights. Others are still waiting on luggage that is nowhere to be found, KRQE reported.
“It’s just been an absolute mess,” Mary Lovato, who was waiting with her daughter and her daughter’s boyfriend, told KRQE. “They were supposed to catch a flight around 3:30 in the afternoon, Monday. However, their flight was canceled. They had to come back, and again a four-hour delay. It’s just been quite a process. Quite tiring.”
The Sunport said during a five-day span there were 149 cancellations affecting passengers. The problems have mostly affected Southwest travelers. Southwest Airlines blames bad weather and said they plan to operate on a reduced schedule for the next several days.
Travelers like Lari Fastnacht and her daughter who are visiting New Mexico from Montana picked up their baggage Tuesday night, which was supposed to arrive days ago. They told KRQE it was difficult contacting the airline, which told them their flight on Thursday was also canceled.
“Soonest that they said they can get us in is not until about Sunday,” Fastnacht said. “If we have to just cancel the flight, we’ll have to book with another airline.”
More than 5,000 flights were canceled across the country Tuesday. Around half of them were Southwest flights.
