A moose is still on the loose in northern New Mexico. Residents of Mora spotted a moose this week, following a moose sighting in the area between Mora and Las Vegas.

According to KRQE, New Mexico Game and Fish believe both sightings are the same moose that was also seen on October 3 in Questa. The moose has also been spotted in Taos Pueblo on October 14. The moose is believed to be a young male.

“Generally, what we find young male moose looking for is a new habitat or breeding opportunities as they disperse,” Ryan Darr with New Mexico Game and Fish Department told KRQE.

A moose was spotted a few times in the last few years just across the Colorado state line in Costilla. New Mexico Game and Fish said they’ve tracked that moose back to Colorado though it returns for an occasional visit.

Officials believe there won’t be a permanent moose population in New Mexico. In order to have an established moose population, the right conditions and females are needed. New Mexico Game and Fish said while there have been a couple of females spotted over the years, there’s no evidence they’ve stayed.
