A dangerous stretch of road in Albuquerque has become even more dangerous these days.

Area residents report that a stretch of Gibson Boulevard near Louisiana Boulevard is pitch-dark at night, thanks to several streetlights that have been broken for weeks. Residents are concerned a fatal crash could occur or burglars could use the darkness to break into homes or cars in the area. Safety on or near the road is becoming a real concern for those who live in the area.

Local resident Steve Marks told KRQE News he has one thought when leaving his home at 5 a.m. “Safely getting out of the driveway. I have grandkids that I have to pick up.”

Gibson is already a marked road in the city. Speed cameras were recently installed along Gibson in an effort to discourage drivers from racing their cars along the street. It hasn’t worked; two people recently died in a five-car crash. No updates have been given on what caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle and cross into oncoming traffic.

KRQE News questioned the city’s department of municipal development about the broken lights, but were told the department hadn’t received any complaints about the lights being out.

KRQE News also reported it was told by the city that PNM (Public Service Company of New Mexico) is responsible for maintaining the stretch of lights that are broken, but PNM said it has yet to confirm whose responsibility the lights are.
