After upgrading city swimming pools, the City of Albuquerque is looking for lifeguards, a recent KRQE report said.

“We’re still offering lifeguard classes now, " Josh Herbert, the City's Aquatics Division manager, told the station. "If someone is interested in becoming a lifeguard, all they have to do is contact one of the pools, there’s [sic] lifeguard instructors on staff who can teach you how to become a lifeguard and we’re currently hiring."

In order to become a lifeguard, you must be at least 15 years of age and have an American Red Cross lifeguarding, first aid and AED certification; and you must pass the City’s aquatics lifeguard skills test, the report said.

The City offers lifeguard classes throughout the year. A fee of $75 for the class is being charged, but it is free for City of Albuquerque new hires. Interested people can apply for lifeguard jobs at cabq.gov/parksandrecreation/recreation/swimming/be-a-lifeguard.

"The City of Albuquerque Aquatics Division offers lifeguards the opportunity to work year-round at its various swimming pools," the City said on its website. "It is a great way to work outdoors in the summer and avoid the cold once the winter returns."

One of the job's fringe benefits is staying in shape.

"Not many jobs pay you to stay in shape or be physically fit, but this is definitely one of them," the City said. "Lifeguards need to stay in shape in order to help ensure the safety of the people utilizing Aquatics facilities. This job is great motivation to stay working on your fitness!"
