After 10 years, the City of Albuquerque has opened a new library in the International District, KOB 4 reported.

“This is a monumental day for the library and the city, the building has been in the works for over 10 years and it was identified back in 2007 as a gap in our service areas," Dean Smith, director of public libraries of Albuquerque and Bernalillo Counties, told KOB 4.

Smith went into more detail about the resources that would be provided by the new library.

“Books, DVDs and computers. We have odd things like cake pans and Wi-Fi that you can check out, hot spots I should say, and it provides space," Smith said.

Smith discussed his hopes for the impact that the library could have on the community.

"We hope this will become the town hall, the town square for the International District. People will hold their meetings here, people will come and study here," Smith told KOB 4.

The new library is one of the ways the city is to trying to give more resources to historically underserved neighborhoods.
