The New Mexico National Guard worked to secure Las Vegas, New Mexico, from potential flood damage after wildfires ravaged the countryside.
“We’re all here trying to help our neighbors and our families protect their homes and their possessions," New Mexico National Guard Sgt. Iain Jaramillo told KOB 4 News.
National Guard members come from across the state to help, Jaramillo said.
The National Guard was originally activated by the New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, to fight wildfires, but now the service members are helping the city protect against the possibility of catastrophic flooding, KOB 4 reported.
The National Guard’s mission is to mitigate flood damage. They handed out 50,000 sandbags Monday, 100 per household.
To the help the National Guard, 100 firefighters traveled to Las Vegas, according to KOB 4 News.
