Earlier this month, a Los Alamos teacher traveled to Ukraine and rescued her mother at the Ukraine-Romania border amidst the ongoing conflict, KOB 4 reported.

“While there are many responsibilities we have, legislatively and traveling the state, the most important – as I always say – is working with constituents. It shouldn't take a U.S. senator or a U.S. representative having to call and intervene in these cases, but in this case, because we were able to work directly with the family, the State Department and others, and the family did everything that they were asked to do, we were able to get them reunited sooner,” Sen. Ben Ray Luján said, according to KOB 4.

The teacher's name is Inna Bohn, who is a Los Alamos Middle School educator. She traveled to Romania to get her mother across the border in Ukraine and transport her back to the U.S.

Bohn's mother was originally reluctant to leave the country due to her familial ties and roots to the area, but the situation there quickly worsened and she was ultimately convinced to leave.

Bohn didn't have the funds required to make the trip to Ukraine, so she took to the community and asked for help, KOB 4 reported. Someone from the community decided to purchase tickets for her, which allowed her to make the journey. On her way back, she had trouble going through the visa process in time to return for responsibilities and asked Luján to fast-track the process, a request that he obliged.

With Luján on her side, she was able to obtain a visa within a week.
