A New Mexico Democratic State representative has been ordered to pay a $250 fine in a settlement with the State Ethics Commission in connection with a DUI.

Rep. Georgene Louis was pulled over and arrested for an aggravated DUI last February, a recent KOB 4 news report said. During the arrest she sought favorable treatment by using her status as a New Mexico lawmaker.

“I haven’t had much sleep,” Louis said in police video of her traffic stop. “I’m a legislator, we haven’t had much sleep.”

The New Mexico State Ethics Commission said that Louis violated the state Governmental Conduct Act by using her status as a legislator when police arrested her, the news report said.

Louis agreed to pay a fine as a settlement, and the commission agreed to not pursue civil enforcement action for violating the Conduct Act.

Louis apologized for her actions, calling it a “lapse in judgment," the news report said. She has so far not pleaded guilty to the charges, but she has announced she will not be seeking reelection this year.
