A wildfire in Calf Canyon/Hermits Peak has claimed more than 145,000 acres as evacuation efforts in the area continue, according to KOB 4.
"Crews continue to work up 65 to protect those values that have been impacted by fire," Todd Able, operations section chief, said. "They are using firing operations, putting fire on the ground to keep fire from impacting those values at risk, working on keeping all the pumps; all the hose lays are taken care of along this whole corridor."
The fire continues to spread as firefighters struggle to get the blaze under control. At over 145,000 acres burned, it is now one of the largest wildfires in New Mexico state history and is the largest current wildfire in progress in the U.S., KOB 4 reported.
Due to the rapid spread of the fire, officials have now called for the evacuation of Mora. Everyone who is leaving the area is required to go through designated evacuation routes for safety. Several roads in the area are closed to prevent run-ins with the fire and allow firefighters to move about the area.
Those who are found within restricted areas could face a hefty fine and jail time, according to KOB 4.
