Santa Fe authorities recently arrested a suspect who has been tied to more than a dozen burglaries and hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages in the city's downtown business district.

KOB 4 News reported on Monday that the alleged burglar, Edgar Guzman, is being charged with18 robberies carried out since last December.

Police arrested Guzman following the burglary of Manitou Galleries in downtown Albuquerque, where the suspect allegedly stole approximately $250,000 worth of art and jewelry, the news report said. Authorities were able to connect Guzman to a string of other robberies after arresting him for the art gallery burglary.

"It's a huge hit when you're talking stuff that's one-of-a-kind that can't be replaced," Sandy Swatek, office manager for Manitou Galleries, told KOB 4.

Santa Fe police estimate that during the crime spree, Guzman allegedly stole approximately $400,000 in goods and caused even more damage in the process of robbing, the news report said. Prosecutors are charging Guzman with 30 counts including the robberies, and he could face a basic sentence of 91 1/2 years of imprisonment if convicted.

Guzman's detention hearing has been rescheduled for May 9 to determine if he will be granted bail or if he will remain in jail before his trial.
