People living in several communities located near the Cooks Peak Fire have been told to evacuate their homes as thousands of acres have already been burned in its fiery path.

Officials reported that no buildings have been damaged and no one has been hurt as of yet, but the fire is spreading rapidly, KOB 4 reported.

"It's a very fast-moving fire, a fast-growing fire, it's currently burning toward the east," Matthew Garcia, a firefighter with the U.S. Forest Service, told KOB 4. "It's burning a few different heads so to speak, it's kind of like a hand with a bunch of fingers, it's spreading to the East with these red flag winds. These winds have been pretty hard for the past few days."

The fire originally broke out north of Ocate on private land in Mora County, and its speed has put a number of communities at risk of destruction, KOB 4 reported.

People living east of County Road 009 and north of Highway 120 in Mora County have already been ordered to evacuate due to the fire, KOB 4 reported. Sweetwater, Rayado and Sunnyside in Colfax County have been ordered to evacuate as well. Cimmaron and Miami have been told to be prepared to evacuate immediately should fire officials deem it necessary.

The fire has already spread to over 21,000 acres, fueled by windy conditions that allowed for the fire's rapid movement and make it harder to contain, KOB 4 reported.
