An overflow fire located near Roswell has been 80% contained, according to authorities.
Justin Powell, chief of Dexter Fire and Rescue, provided an assessment of the situation.
“Over the day, during the process, the heat and humidity dropped,” he said. “A little bit of wind and stuff, I guess, got a little bit away from them, for what they had planned on.”
The wildfire broke out south of Chaves County and spread from there, according to KOB 4. It continued to burn before it could be stopped. The fire started as a controlled burn but got out of control quickly and by Monday, it had burned 1,900 acres.
The latest update revealed that the fire has been 80% contained, as reported by fire officials. Though officials initially contained the fire shortly after it started, the fire again broke out several hours later and is close to being under control.
The reason for the breakout was the dry, tall grass in the area of the fire. Officials believe this could be a sign of worse things to come, and could very well be indicative of a bad fire season in the upcoming months.
