A recent nonpartisan survey showed that the majority of New Mexicans support affordable health care reforms.
A statewide survey of New Mexicans found that 72% of respondents supported a public health care option that would be available to anyone who requested it, according to nmtogether4health.org.
"During the pandemic, it became even more clear to New Mexicans that we are, as a community, only as healthy as sort of the least healthy person within your group," Alex Williams, a health care policy advocate with the New Mexico Center on Law and Poverty, said. "Majorities of Republicans, Independents, and Democrats – across the political divide – support opening up the exchanges to everyone, opening up Medicaid to everyone, and they expect and want the state to take action to make health care more affordable for everyone."
The survey indicated that respondents across all political groups were in favor of the option, with 83% of Democrats, 72% of Independents, and 57% of Republicans supporting expanding public health care, KOB 4 reported.
After the pandemic, many New Mexicans believe health care should be available to everybody, especially those who cannot afford it.
Many respondents said they had to sacrifice the medical care they needed due to high cost, and many people postpone medical care until their symptoms get much worse and end up going to the emergency room.
