Nearly two years after his death, New Mexico native and author Rudolfo Anaya is the subject of a play about his life.
Cecelia Aragon, a University of New Mexico alumna, is directing and co-producing the play that will memorialize Anaya, known as the "Father of Chicano Literature," according to KOB 4.
"This play is about, yes, it's about Rudolfo Anaya, his accomplishments and receiving the National Humanities Award from Barack Obama," Aragon told KOB 4. "But a lot of the larger picture is really about the human condition. What we learn from Rudolfo Anaya is writing about culture and writing about people of a specific region."
Anaya was dubbed the "Father of Chicano Literature" as a result of his long ties to New Mexican culture, music, language, and people, KOB 4 reported.
The play will focus on his lifelong struggle with disabilities. Aragon noted that Anaya has long been deeply connected to the state he called home.
Aragon told KOB 4 that the production also examines the challenges that the culture Anaya lived in had to endure to emerge as part of contemporary society, ranging from technology to the fears of losing one's native language and culture as people assimilate into a community.
