The New Mexico Film Office confirmed that the new feature movie “Oppenheimer” is currently being filmed in the state. The movie, directed by Christopher Nolan, is in production in Abiquiu and Los Alamos, according to the state's Economic Development Department. It is being shot in New Mexico due to the fact that the atomic bomb was developed and tested in the state.

The film is intended to portray the man who invented the atomic bomb in an attempt to save the world.

“Oppenheimer is a project from one of New Mexico’s Film Partners – NBCUniversal. This production is employing thousands of New Mexicans and will be partially filmed in Los Alamos, which is only appropriate as the development of the atomic bomb is deeply tied to New Mexico,” Amber Dodson, director of the New Mexico Film Office, said in a press release.

Dodson was pleased that an acclaimed director such as Nolan was directing such a high-profile film in New Mexico.

“We welcome Christopher Nolan and the all-star cast to New Mexico to shoot this major feature film in our state,” she said.

The film's cast includes Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon and Josh Hartnett.

The movie will employ approximately 190 New Mexicans as crew members, and 1,200 as background and extras. It is scheduled to be released in July 2023.
