A tragic auto accident claimed the lives of nine individuals in a crash that involved the University of Southwest golf team.

“We are still learning the details about the accident but we are devastated and deeply saddened to learn about the loss of our students’ lives and their coach,” University President Quint Thurman said in a statement.

The accident was a head-on collision in which a pickup truck illegally crossed the center line and crashed into a van. That van carried golf students from the University of the Southwest and their coaches on the evening of March 15, according to AP News.

Of the students, six were killed as well as one of the coaches. Two were killed from the pickup truck, the driver and the passenger. Two students were also hospitalized in Lubbock and were transported there by helicopter.

The golf teams were on the way to a tournament which was taking place at Midland College near Dallas.

To investigate the crash, the National Transportation Safety Board is sending a "go" team to understand why the crash occurred and what might be done in the future to prevent similar collisions. The speed limit on the road in question is 75 mph.
