New Mexico Sen. Ben Ray Lujan underwent brain surgery after suffering a stroke in early February.

Luján was hospitalized but is "expected to make a full recovery," Carlos Sanchez, the senator's chief of staff, said.

"Senator Luján was found to have suffered a stroke in the cerebellum, affecting his balance. As part of his treatment plan, he subsequently underwent decompressive surgery to ease swelling," Sanchez continued.

Luján experienced fatigue and dizziness and decided to check himself into a hospital, where the surgery was conducted. "My thoughts are with Senator Ben Ray Luján and his family. I’m so glad to hear that he will make a full recovery," Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said on Twitter.

The loss of a vote in the Senate complicated the Democrats' push to quickly appoint a new Supreme Court Justice.

Until Luján makes a full recovery, the Democrats do not have enough votes in the Senate to confirm a new supreme court nominee, according to CNBC. News of the stroke took five days to reach people on Capitol Hill, which subsequently raised a lot of questions.
