New Mexico legislators have recently tabled a bill that would provide a framework and tax incentives for the state to develop a hydrogen production hub, according to a KRQE report.

The legislation, House Bill 4, was intended to impose limits on greenhouse gas emissions to approximately 50% below 2005 levels by 2030 and pave the way for a more ecologically friendly economy.

Additionally, the bill seeks to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions on a statewide level by 2050.

The bill's supporters argued that it would increase job creation while simultaneously decreasing the damage that coal-fired power stations do to the communities they serve.

“You know, the economy in New Mexico is based on energy," Rep. Patricia Lundstrom (D-Gallup) stated. "I think New Mexico should be the lead on this thing."

Some legislators also maintained that hydrogen hubs are already emerging around New Mexico and this is the state's opportunity to benefit from clean hydrogen growth.

"We should be close to it and we should be leading the pathway," Lundstrom added.

The House energy, environment, and natural resources committees considered the bill, but after six hours of deliberation, the committee agreed to table the legislation.

Currently, it is unlikely that the legislation will be revisited during the legislative session's shortened session.
