Bernalillo County is requesting millions of dollars for new improvements on Alvarado Square.
According to KRQE, the county is requesting $4 million to expand the new county headquarters just months after moving into the building. They additionally want to add a large county logo, an expanded health clinic, and bullet-proof windows.
“We want to get those windows replaced under that warranty,” Jared Divett, director of Bernalillo County’s Fleet and Facilities Management Department, told the station. “Not necessarily stop a bullet being shot at the building but it would contain the glass which is the main problem we had with the last event.”
The County also wants $1.2 million to build an office for the Behavioral Health and the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council.
The price tag for the building has increased every year since the project began and now totals roughly $67 million, according to KRQE.
Of the seal, “To the tune of over $331,000, I question if that’s the wisest use of our money at this time,” District 5 Commissioner Charlene Pyskoty said. “We haven’t been open to the public for about six months or so? And to replace the windows at this point for $2.6 million, I think that needs to be looked at.”
Commissioners voted to defer but will reconsider after more discussion since it's a substantial request.
“Just the size of it is too big to just pass without discussion,” said District 4 Commissioner Walt Benson, according to KRQE.
