President Joe Biden recently announced that billions of dollars will go toward the repair and replacement of bridges across the United States as part of the infrastructure bill.

The Department of Transportation and Federal Highway Administration will be spending $27 billion to build new bridges and repair old ones throughout the country. A percentage of the money is going to repair small, rural bridges that have fallen into disrepair, resulting in unsafe crossings that hurt infrastructure, according to NBC News.

"We're sending the message to those communities and the people who call them home, you matter," Biden said, according to NBC News. "We're building back and building back. Better with you, we're making sure you're not left behind, left out."

According to NBC, Biden says that the bridges that are deteriorating are hurting small businesses.

“@POTUS announced the largest investment in American bridges since the creation of the Interstate Highway System," Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a Tweet. "These repairs are going to keep Americans safe and connected, while also creating new job opportunities."

According to the Los Angeles Times, Democrats and Republicans that support the infrastructure bill are expected to promote the legislation on their midterm-election campaigns.

NBC reports that rural bridges are typically left unnoticed even though they are vital to local economies and can potentially cause problems if first responders have to avoid them.
