The gift of life was plentiful across New Mexico in 2021, with a record number of organ donations occurring in the state during the year, saving a number of lives in the process.
According to a KRQE report, 200 life-saving transplants occurred last year, made possible by 93 donors, a 50% increase over the previous two years.
“We have families during this time as well just wanting to help other families, to have this impact on people who are waiting for an organ during these times shows a lot about our community, our hospital partners and the families we have in New Mexico,” Wayne Dunlap, executive director for New Mexico Donor Services, told KRQE.
In addition to the 93 organ donors, more than 500 state residents also donated tissue, including bone and skin, with a single donation offering the opportunity to impact the lives of up to 100 people.
Moreover, KRQE reported that 2021 proved to be challenging year for the medical community in New Mexico and elsewhere, including hospitals. Dunlap told the station that it has been inspiring to see people make donations amid a pandemic.
