Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, along with Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller, announced a comprehensive public safety package by the governor on Jan. 13, just ahead of the 2022 legislative session.

“Living in a safe and healthy community is the right of every New Mexican, and these are smart proposals that get and keep the worst of the worst off of New Mexico streets,” Lujan Grisham said in the release.

Grisham wants to keep violent criminals accused of murder, rape, gun crimes, or other gun crimes to be kept off the street while pending trial , the release said, and would like to increase penalties for second-degree murder by increasing minimum sentencing from 15 to 18 years and removing the statute of limitations.

The package also recommends a 20% raise for police officers and a $100 million fund to train, recruit, and hire new officers.

In general, the package seeks to raise minimum sentences for violent crimes in order to keep those violent individuals off the streets.

“For Albuquerque, this legislative session is about getting the reform and investments we need to make a real impact on crime,” Keller said in the release.
