A state organization that provides rehabilitative and after-care services to children and their families, along with the state’s largest electricity provider, have joined forces to help thousands of foster children.
The New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department (CYFD) and PNM have partnered together to create a new project called “Duffels with Dignity” to help foster children with luggage of their own, according to KRQE.
“This will be a long burn project. As kids come through, they will receive a duffel bag,” said PNM Spokesperson Meaghan Cavanaugh.
The partnership hopes to provide children in foster care new duffel bags which will be theirs to keep, along with instilling a sense of dignity within each child as they navigate a transition which can often be daunting, PRN said in a Facebook post.
Terry Locke, deputy secretary of the New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department, said that they realized that there was a need to fill and were glad to help, according to the Grant County Beat.
“PNM recognized a need and stepped up to make a positive impact for kids in foster care,” Locke said. “Being able to give a duffel bag filled with such lovingly selected items will surely bring a sense of pride and comfort to the children who receive them.”
