An Albuquerque man was recently given four years in prison for illegal possession of weapons and stealing identification papers.
According to a New Mexico Department of Justice news release, 26-year-old Travis Fanning was a passenger in a car that was stopped for a traffic violation on Aug. 22, 2020 when law enforcement personnel found him in custody of a loaded and stolen firearm. He was sentenced on Dec. 8 in federal court to four years, nine months for being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition with "intent to use or transfer five or more identification documents or authentication features."
In November of the same year, Fanning was found by officers in the laundry room of an apartment complex smoking methamphetamine with another loaded gun, along with stolen identification documents.
“Officers found Fanning with a loaded firearm and a folder filled with identification documents, including Social Security cards, driver licenses, bank statements and blank checks,” the news release stated.
Fanning already had several felony convictions in multiple states when he was arrested.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jaymie L. Roybal prosecuted the case with evidence that was collected by The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Albuquerque Police Department.
