Student-led New Mexico social justice group disbands amid 'burnout'

Fight For Our Lives, a network of students across New Mexico, has decided to shut down indefinitely after three years of promoting social justice causes.

The self-imposed shutdown was announced on its Facebook page.

“All good things must come to an end — even organizations,” wrote co-founder Jonathon Juarez.  “It's been a wild three years, and one of the hardest decisions I've ever made, but it's time that I announce that Fight For Our Lives is coming to an end. I couldn't be prouder of all the young leaders this space was able to foster, and I know that our communities are better because of the multiple victories FFOL youth were a part of leading."

FFOL advocated for gun violence prevention in 2018, sought climate crisis action in 2019, and promoted Albuquerque Mutual Aid in 2020.

Juarez said the decision to disband the organization came as a result of life circumstances and the impact of COVID-19.

“All of our young people have other things they need to focus on,” he wrote. “We don't have the capacity to keep this organization going — especially after a chaotic year like 2020. I know that many organizers and organizations are dealing with burnout from the past several months, and our youth are no exception.”

The remaining FFOL funds will be reallocated to Albuquerque Mutual Aid, an organization that delivers free contactless care packages.
