Politicians and political parties in New Mexico are extending their condolences following the death of Gen. Colin Powell, who died on Oct.18 at the age of 84 as a result of COVID-19 complications.
Powell was receiving treatment at the Walter Reed National Medical Center at the time of his death, according to a KRQE report.
"May Colin Powell rest in peace. We lost a great American at the age of 84. He was fully vaccinated and passed away due to complications from COVID," Brett Kokinadis, Santa Fe Republicans' 2nd Vice Chair, said.
Following the announcement of Powell's death, the Republican Party of New Mexico issued an official statement.
“Today our nation lost a truly great American hero, a genuine trailblazer and an inspirational leader," Chairman Steve Pearce said in the official statement. " I knew Gen. Powell and worked with him while he was Secretary of State. He was a pioneer and a man trusted by America and the entire world. Gen. Powell was a soldier, a patriot and a diplomat who helped shape foreign policy in some of our most difficult times. I knew him as a man of great integrity, who not only broke racial barriers in government but also served America with extraordinary distinction, honor and with a true understanding of American values.
Pearce also described Powell as a "revered public servant who had vision and courage who distinguished himself as a great military leader."
Powell was the first African American to serve as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Secretary of State.
