Taxpayers demand accountability after 'thousands and thousands of dollars' of school gym equipment left outdoors for months

More than two dozen pieces of school gym equipment belonging to Albuquerque's Highland High School have been left sitting in the outdoors for more than two months, prompting citizens from the community to demand accountability for what they say is a waste of taxpayer dollars, according to KRQE.

The equipment includes workout benches as well as several universal weight sets, treadmills and exercise bikes.

Highland High School Athletics Director John Barnhill said the equipment had been outside since the beginning of the semester because there is no storage space for the equipment. During a $12 million gym renovation a couple of years ago, Barnhill told KRQE, the equipment had been moved into the  and auto shops. However, that area has now been converted into something else, leaving the older gym equipment with nowhere to go.

One anonymous Albuquerque woman stated her disdain, saying, “Just shock it was abandoned, just left outside. Thousands and thousands of dollars of equipment that taxpayers pay for.”
