The Albuquerque City Council is asking courts to impose harsher punishments for gun offenses, according to a report by KRQE.
Council President Cynthia Borrego said she collaborated with the Albuquerque Police Department to develop a memorial urging prosecutors and judges to impose harsher penalties for individuals convicted of gun-related crimes.
"I think we have to use every tool in the toolbox,” Borrego told KRQE. “I think our laws need to be strong and let the criminals know they cannot just go out and commit a crime and go home and go back and commit another crime.”
If the memorial is approved, the city would then send a copy to each state legislator in Albuquerque, as well as state House and Senate leaders.
Additionally, Borrego said that she would like to see a 24/7 GPS tracking system for suspects awaiting trial, so that police would be informed instantly if they committed another crime.
According to KRQE, House Democrats have announced a new comprehensive crime package; however, the proposal does not contain longer prison sentences.
