New Mexico state officials continue discussing an appropriate plan for the refugees landing at the Holloman Air Force Base.
It is unclear whether any of the refugees will remain in New Mexico either long-term or permanently.
"New Mexico's Second District is on track to host more Afghan refugees than any other congressional district in the nation. We need transparency on vetting, numbers, and resettlement plans," Rep. Yvette Herrell (R-NM) wrote in a tweet.
A Senior White House representative assured that the Biden administration is making efforts to come to an agreement with New Mexico to cope with the influx, KRQE notes. Though some residents support local housing for the refugees, others believe the influx is rushed and should be filtered with a system that garners details about each individual coming to the area.
“We also are grateful for the folks who are making that happen, obviously in a military capacity and also in a civilian and diplomatic capacity. We want to make sure that there’s a home in Albuquerque for everyone who can get here,” said Keller during an event Friday afternoon to support the Afghan community. “I’m proud that our city is a refugee resettlement location. It has been now for almost 50 years.”
According to KRQE, Holloman Air Force Base is in Herrell’s district, and Herrell maintains that many outstanding questions need to be answered before any relocations could be considered.
“It is nice that we have an opportunity to play a role in the humanitarian efforts, but at the same time, we need to be looking at the bigger picture: is everyone being properly vetted, in terms of security,” said Herrell. “How many people are we talking about, what is the timeframe, what is the rollout to settle either in Albuquerque or other communities throughout New Mexico or the nation?”
