On Aug. 26, two suicide bombers and gunmen attacked the airport in Kabul, Afghanistan, killing 12 U.S. Troops and 60 Afghans.

The attack happened as roughly 5,000 people were waiting desperately for flights out of the country to flee the Taliban takeover. According to U.S. officials, 11 Marines and one Navy medic were among those killed, KRQE News reported.

"Heartbreaking to hear of the loss of at least 10 US military due to events in Afghanistan," New Mexico State Rep. Rebecca Dow (R-Truth or Consequences) wrote in an Aug. 26 Tweet. "In NM we have a number of vets who could use our thanks today. I am praying for the families of those who lost loved ones in Middle East & for those still stranded overseas."

KRQE News reported that the Islamic State has taken responsibility for the attacks, which have been condemned by the Taliban.

Gen. Frank McKenzie, the head of U.S. Central Command overseeing the evacuation operations, warned that more attacks are expected in Afghanistan.

During a speech from the White House, Pres. Joe Biden said that the U.S. military would be developing plans to respond to the attacks.

“We will not forgive. We will not forget. We will hunt you down and make you pay,” Biden said, according to KRQE News.
