Virgin Galactic confirmed the launch date, along with various other advancements related to its recent innovative space tourism project, developed through its partnership with New Mexico’s Tourism Department. The company’s first fully crewed spaceflight is scheduled to take flight on Sunday, July 11.
“An entirely new era for tourism begins here in New Mexico,” Tourism Secretary Jen Paul Schroer said. “We’re excited to share New Mexico’s rich history of space and science, along with our vast open spaces and dark skies with the world.”
According to a related press release, New Mexico True will contribute as a presenting partner to the launch, known as “Unity 22.” The flight is the first of its kind to carry two pilots and four mission specialists inside the cabin. The crew will include Virgin Galactic Founder Sir Richard Branson, who will be testing the private astronaut experience.
“This is a huge moment for Spaceport America and New Mexico. By investing in the aerospace industry, New Mexico continues to demonstrate its commitment to diversifying its economy,” Economic Development Secretary Alicia Keyes said.
The launch, scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. MST, will be accessible via live stream on VirginGalactic.com, as well as the company’s Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook platforms. Industry experts estimate the cost of the project to reach $8 billion by 2030, the release states.
“We couldn’t be more excited to finally share this groundbreaking moment with the world,” Gov. Michelle Grisham said. “New Mexico has always been a hub for exploration, and the dawn of space tourism is happening right here.”
