The crisis along New Mexico's southern border is creating increased tensions and a rise in crimes such as sex and drug trafficking.

"These photos are from yesterday morning, 15 miles north of the border in my district," U.S. Rep. Yvette Herrell (R-Alamogordo) tweeted on June 14. "The Biden Border Crisis is only getting worse and there is no end in sight."

The Republican Party of New Mexico (RPNM) is calling on Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham to join Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey, who sent a joint letter to all governors requesting law enforcement support along the border, according to a RPNM press release

“This is an opportunity for our governor to make a difference and show that border security is paramount to the safety and well-being of New Mexicans,” RPNM Chairman Steve Pearce said in the release. “Border security should be among her top priorities. She has done nothing to address this emergency, and the failure of the Biden Administration to do anything to end this ongoing crisis is appalling.”

Herrell, in another tweet, wrote about how Vice President Kamala Harris has yet to visit the border as she said she would to see the problem for herself, despite many lawmakers asking her multiple times to finally make the trip.

"In 75 days as border czar, Kamala Harris hasn't been to our southern border even once," Herrell wrote.

According to the RPNM release, 180,034 migrants were apprehended trying to cross the border in May, a record high in nearly 21 years. The release also stated that the number of migrants apprehended is a 200% increase from an average May during the Trump administration.

More than 14,100 children who were unaccompanied were also apprehended, the release said. According to the release, in the first five months of Biden's taking office, more than 711,000 migrants have been caught while trying to illegally cross into America.

"Remember when Lujan Grisham said, 'No one should get to do border-security policy that doesn’t live on the border?' the RPNM release said. "Well, now is her time to take action."
